Carlo Di Lanno

San Francisco Ballet, Soloist

carlodilannoCarlo Di Lanno was born in Naples, Italy, and trained at La Scala Ballet School. He danced with La Scala Ballet and Staatsballett Berlin before joining San Francisco Ballet as a soloist in 2014.

At San Francisco Ballet, Di Lanno has danced principal roles in Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet (Romeo); Tomasson/Possokhov’s Don Quixote (Espada); Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments (Phlegmatic) and Serenade (Waltz); Forsythe’s The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude; Ratmansky’s Shostakovich Trilogy (Symphony #9) and Souvenir d’un lieu cher; Robbins’ Dances at a Gathering (Green); and Thatcher’s Frayed.

Before joining SF Ballet, Di Lanno made his debut as Siegfried in Nureyev’s Swan Lake at age 20, partnering Polina Semionova, and danced Ratmansky’s Concerto DSCH with Svetlana Zakharova. He performed principal or featured roles in Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (pas de six), Eifman’s Tchaikovsky (Jungermann), Nureyev’s Don Quixote (Basilio), Balanchine’s “Diamonds” (principal) and Theme and Variations (principal), Dell’ Ara’s Excelsior (pas de cinq), MacMillan’s L’histoire de Manon (Three Gentlemen), Petit’s Pink Floyd Ballet (principal), Ratmansky’s Russian Seasons (Green), and Vikharev’s Raymonda (grand pas classique).

Di Lanno has performed on tour in Belo Horizonte, Sao Paolo, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Hong Kong; Tokyo; Astana, Kazakhstan; Muscat, Oman; and Moscow (Bolshoi Theatre).

He was named Best Emerging Artist at the Premio Danza&Danza Gala in Brescia, Italy, in June 2015 and won The Erik Bruhn Prize in Toronto, Canada, in March 2015. He was named “Italian Classical Dancer of the Year” at Positano Premia la Danza Léonide Massine in Positano, Italy, in September 2014.
